Advance Your Wilderness Medicine Skills with SOLO Southeast Bridge Courses
At SOLO Southeast Wilderness Medicine, we are proud to be part of the long-standing SOLO tradition of excellence in wilderness medicine education. Our instructors bring decades of real-world experience in backcountry leadership, emergency response, and outdoor education to every course we teach.
One of the most efficient and flexible ways to develop your skills with us is through our bridge courses, specialized programs designed to build on your current certification and help you move to the next level without starting over. View Bridge Courses »
What Are Bridge Courses?
Bridge courses are accelerated training programs that allow you to upgrade an existing wilderness medicine certification to a higher level of backcountry medical competence. Instead of taking a full-length course, you complete only the additional training required to advance.
For example, you might move:
- From Wilderness First Aid (WFA) to Advanced Wilderness First Aid (AWFA)
- From Wilderness First Aid (WFA) to Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
- From Advanced Wilderness First Aid (AWFA) to Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
- From Wilderness First Responder (WFR) to Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
Our bridge courses focus on advanced patient treatment, critical decision-making, leadership, and realistic scenario-based training. You’ll learn how to manage injuries and illnesses in remote settings where evacuation may be delayed and long-term care is required. These courses are intensive, practical, and designed to strengthen both your technical skills and your confidence.

What Are the Benefits of Bridge Courses?
Certification Upgrade
The primary benefit of a bridge course is the ability to leverage your prior training. If you already hold a WFA or AWFA certification, you don’t need to take a full-length course to earn a higher credential like WFR or EMR. You build directly on the foundation you’ve already established.
Time and Cost Efficiency
Bridge courses condense the additional training you need into a shorter, focused format—often just a few days. Because they take less time, we can offer them at a lower price. For example, instead of completing a full 9-day WFR course, you can bridge from AWFA to WFR in just 4 days.
Bridge courses that lead to more advanced certifications also don’t increase your long-term maintenance costs. For example, our WFA-to-AWFA bridge course costs the same as a standard WFA course, so you essentially get an upgrade for the same price you would pay to recertify your WFA. In addition, AWFA certifications are recertified through a WFA course, meaning the AWFA does not cost more to maintain.
This makes advancing your certification more manageable financially and logistically.
Professional Development
Bridge courses can open professional doors without a multi-week time investment. For example, taking a bridge course to earn a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification can position students for careers as:
- Outdoor guides
- Trip leaders
- Forest Service employees
- Search and rescue team members
- Outdoor educators
Because the WFR certification is a standard for many outdoor jobs, upgrading your certification strengthens your resume, increases your employability, and prepares you for leadership roles in the outdoor industry.

Benefits for Recreational Outdoor Enthusiasts
While wilderness medicine courses are often required for outdoor industry professionals, they are also incredibly valuable for anyone who recreates outdoors, including:
- Hikers
- Backpackers
- Rock climbers
- Paddlers
- Mountain bikers
Advanced wilderness medical training gives you the skills to assess injuries, stabilize patients, manage group dynamics, and make sound evacuation decisions. For many recreational adventurers, bridge courses are about more than a certification—they’re about confidence, preparedness, and being able to take care of your partners when it counts.
Recertification Opportunities
Bridge courses can also serve as a strategic way to renew and advance at the same time. If your certification is nearing expiration, you can use your recertification period to step up to the next level rather than simply renewing the same credential.

Stack Your Certifications
One of the most exciting advantages of our bridge courses is that you can stack them.
With thoughtful scheduling, you can move from:
- WFA → AWFA (2 days)
- AWFA → WFR (4 days)
That’s just 6 total course days for WFA certified students to earn their WFR certification—compared to a traditional 9-day WFR course.
You can move quickly within one season or spread your advancement over several years as your experience grows. It all starts with your wilderness first aid training—and grows from there with your goals.
